The Best Books on Justification
Justification is God's gracious legal act of declaring guilty sinners righteous in his sight, not by anything they have done but solely through faith in Jesus Christ. In this once-for-all verdict God pardons all our sins and credits, or imputes, the perfect righteousness of Christ to us. It rests entirely on Christ's finished work received by faith alone, apart from works, which is why the Reformers called it the article on which the church stands or falls.
Few doctrines matter more than justification, the truth that God counts sinners righteous through faith in Christ alone. The books below are all currently in print and written from a confessional Reformed and evangelical perspective, defending sola fide and the imputation of Christ's righteousness. We have sorted them into three tiers so you can start where you are, whether you want a clear introduction or a deep scholarly treatment. Begin with a basic title, then work upward as your understanding grows.
