Apostasy from the Gospel by John Owen

Apostasy from the Gospel

by John Owen

A searching study of how professing Christians, churches, and whole cultures drift away from the gospel not only through open heresy but through gradual decay in doctrine, holiness, and worship. Owen anatomizes the causes of this defection and prescribes the means of prevention and recovery, insisting the danger is real enough that no age can safely ignore it.

Based on The Nature and Causes of Apostasy from the Gospel (1676), Works of John Owen, vol. 7

In John Owen's own words

There are three things in the gospel which are as the essentially constitutive parts of it: the mystery of its doctrine, which is the object of faith; the holiness of its precepts, which are the matter of our obedience; and the purity of its institutions of worship, which is the trial of our faith and obedience.
Apostasy from the Gospel, Chapter III
No unholy person hath any ground to expect the least advantage by the gospel, here or hereafter.
